Title: Informal institutions and corporate reputational risk: the role of public environmental perceptions (by C. Gaganis, P. Papadimitri, F. Pasiouras & A. Ventouri)
Location: Griparion Megaron, 1 Sofokleous Str., 4th floor, 416.
Abstract
In recent years, raising public awareness about issues surrounding the impact of corporate activities on the quality of the physical environment and climate change put substantial pressure on managers and one could say that firms now operate within an extreme institutional environment. Using a sample of 748 firms from 19 European countries over the period 2015-2017 we aim to reveal whether and how social expectations influence firm reputational risk related to environmental, social and governance issues. Our results show that more environmental-friendly public perceptions result in lower reputational risk. This finding holds when we look, on an individual basis, the opinions of the public in relation to: (i) energy, (ii) climate, and (iii) the introduction of certain policies. Our results hold when we control for various firm-level and country-level control variables, and when we perform estimations that address potential endogeneity concerns.
